Preschool for the Win

Preschooling it

So when we found out Pearce got accepted to the program and we would be headed over as a family, I started researching schools for the kids. I really wanted to find somewhere Lucille and Hendryx could play and interact with other kids. I found a place called English Childcare Maastricht and contacted them to see if they could accommodate the kids for three weeks. Sure enough I heard back from the school director and she said they would love to have them.

So on Monday morning we walked the kids over to the school (about 2 miles) from the hotel. The building reminded me of an old British school building. The classes were divided by age all the way down to babies. Hendryx and Lucille were put in the same group so it would be easier on them. We gave our kisses and hugs and left them to it. I was worried about Hendryx because it was his first day of school, but he wasn't phased when we said goodbye. He is such a chill kid.

While they were in school we would get little updates about the school activities for the day and different pictures of them. It was a really sweet gesture and I was happy to see them and the different things they were doing throughout the day.

I picked them up at 4pm and all was good. Marlies, the school director, assured me that the kids were doing great. She actually couldn't believe that neither had gotten upset at some point in the day. Knowing how far I walked, she offered to pick the kids up and drop them off in her van each day- an offer I gladly accepted! On the walk home that day, they both were happy, if not tired from a long school day (and Hendryx even had a nap). They could barely stay awake on the 40 minute walk home and crashed hard that night.

In the days to come we got a nice routine together. We got them ready with their backpacks, lunch boxes, and jackets. Then we went downstairs to meet Marlies (and her family) in the school's cute little van. We strapped the kids into booster seats and waved to them goodbye. The first day Lucille was nervous and got a little emotional when the baby (also getting a ride in the car) wouldn't stop crying. She's emphatic that way. By day two she hopped right into the van no problem. Hendryx of course went along for the ride no problem and would practically run downstairs in the mornings. I would pick them up between four and five each day, downstairs in front of the hotel (we averaged three days a week) and we would head upstairs to play and eat dinner.

The school is such a blessing and they sure are thriving there. We have had nothing but good feedback from the teachers and get updates on what they are doing each day which I love! I think Lucille is getting the stimulus she is accustomed to and Hendryx is getting good practice for preschool this fall. I have already noticed that he's becoming more independent because of it- hooray!
I have also thoroughly enjoyed some real freedom. It has given me some insight into what my fall will be like!

  1. That looks like a great school...what a great learning experience for the two of them. And how suite was the offer to provide transportation to the school. Kindness and goodness abounds. So what is a typical day like for Pearce?
