Memorial Day in Maastricht 2018
Sunday, May 27th
We all slept in until 8:30am which is a miracle because we have been keeping the windows open for the breeze and the sun rises early here. After some breakfast, we took the car over to the town of Tongoren, Belgium, about a 20 minute drive from where we are staying. Tongeren hosts a very large antiques market every Sunday and so we were eager to check it out. There were in fact a lot of antiques, almost overwhelmingly so as you couldn't focus on any one thing. Lucille found a darling "gold" ballerina pin, I found a wooden cookie press similar to one we bought it China, but this one had a little windmill, and Pearce found some Vlaai (the Dutch pie). Afterwards we went to the Old Mill restaurant and it was just as good as the first time around.
Later in the day we attended the Memorial Day Service at the American Cemetery in Maastricht. While attending last year, I saw that some graves had US state flags on them, so this year we brought Colorado State Flags. We walked up and down the aisles searching for the markers for the small CO which represented that the serviceman was from Colorado and when we found one, we would place the Colorado flag next to the Dutch and American flags. We hope the Dutch families who sponsor the grave swill use the flags in future years.
